Hearing the real-life stories of women in recovery is empowering. When you’re caught in the depths of addiction, it’s difficult to imagine life could ever feel light again. The weight of shame, guilt, and fear can feel suffocating, and yet, every day, women just like you are rising out of that darkness and into something stronger and more resilient.
We’ve got the honor of walking alongside women as they break free from addiction and rebuild lives filled with hope, connection, and surprise. Today, we’re sharing a few powerful women’s recovery stories. These accounts, which illustrate the possibility of recovery, have been anonymized and distributed with consent.
If you’re wondering whether recovery is within reach, these women are proof that it is.
Amanda’s Story: Letting Go of Guilt and Finding Her Voice
At 32, Amanda checked into Serenity Mountain feeling like she had lost everything. Years of struggling with opioid addiction had left her estranged from her family and unsure if she could ever be a decent mom again. “Without the pills, I didn’t even know who I was,” she remarked. “I didn’t feel strong enough to confront the underlying pain.”
Through a combination of trauma counseling, DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), and our Recovery with Children program, Amanda slowly began to reclaim her sense of self. “The therapists here didn’t treat me like I was broken,” she explained. “They saw me. And more importantly, they helped me see myself.”
Amanda is now over 18 months sober and rebuilding her relationship with her children, one honest conversation at a time. “Recovery didn’t give me my old life back; it gave me a new one,” she says, “and I like this version of me a whole lot more.”
Jasmine’s Story: Healing After Trauma
Jasmine’s addiction began as a way to numb the unresolved trauma of childhood abuse. Alcohol became her constant companion, a way to feel less, think less, and remember less. “For a while, it worked,“ she admits. “Until it didn’t.”
By the time she arrived at Serenity Mountain, Jasmine had been in and out of treatment centers that never fully addressed her trauma. What made this place different, she says, was the trauma-informed approach. “I didn’t have to keep my past a secret here,” she said. “I could talk about it without shame,”
She credits trauma yoga therapy, mindfulness practices, and compassionate one-on-one therapy for helping her reconnect with her body and emotions safely. “Now, I feel like I’m not running anymore. I’m present.”
Today, Jasmine volunteers with a local women’s shelter and is pursuing certification as a peer recovery coach. Her recovery success story continues, and she’s using it to uplift others.
Maria’s Story: Sober, Spiritual, and Stronger Than Ever
For Maria, after work, a glass of wine turned into two, then a bottle, and then she discovered he had arrived quietly. She is unable to break the cycle. “I never hit what most people would call a bottom,” she says. “But inside, I felt completely lost.”
Maria chose Serenity Mountain for its optional faith-based program. ”I needed a place where I could reconnect with God but also get real clinical help,” she says. With a blend of CBT, group therapy, and faith-based counseling, Maria began to rebuild her inner foundation.
She now leads a women’s bible study and is active in her church community. “My sober journey isn’t about being perfect,” she says. “It’s about staying connected to myself, to my faith, and to the tools I’ve learned.”
